Earlier this week, CFA Association Russia held its annual Charter Award Ceremony, highlighting the accomplishments of all CFA charterholders and welcoming new members to its growing community. Along with the ceremonial handout of certificates to new charterholders, CFA Russia also presented its 2017 Annual Ethics Award.

The CFA Russia Ethics Award promotes the highest standards of ethical behavior and is presented to a person who demonstrated professional ethics, as well as acted with integrity, respect, and diligence within his or her profession.

The 2017 Ethics Award was presented to Alexander Afanasiev, Chairman of the Executive Board of Moscow Exchange (MoEx). As the head of Russia’s largest stock exchange, Afanasiev’s work has been nothing short of complimentary.

Afanasiev, who holds a PhD in Economics and has more than 25 years of experience in the Russian banking sector, became MoEx’s chairman in 2012. The company held its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2013, which at the time was the largest IPO ever held in Moscow, drawing a big demand from institutional investors across the world.

During his award speech, Afanasiev stressed the importance of ethics in the finance profession, pointing out that it’s very important to regain public trust, which in turn would help the economy.

“Ethics is part of our business model … One of my goals in life is to help the public to understand financial markets and turn Moscow Exchange into the synonym of trust and transparency,” said Afanasiev.

A variety of investment strategies and risks associated with them will certainly create winners and losers in the financial market, but the key thing is to create a fair set of rules and the environment of trust, the head of MoEx added.

On a final note, Afanasiev thanked CFA Russia for the promotion of the highest ethical standards in the finance industry, hoping that cooperation between MoEx and the Russian society of financial professionals will continue successfully in the future.

CFA Russia presents the Ethics Award annually. Previously, six other outstanding individuals received the award:
