On April 29, CFA Association Russia held an online seminar with Yakov Mirkin, PhD, a renowned Russian economist and Head of the Department of International Capital Markets at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO).

Professor Mirkin spoke about his book “Advice on Reckless Handling of Government,” which is a deep, almost philosophical look at the economic and political realities of Russia. The work touches on various themes around the relationship between a person and government, looks at the history of the Russian government’s treatment of the society and what we could learn from it today.

In his book, Professor Mirkin included personal stories and memoires of those who lived through those times. Stories of common people and fragments of old letters help readers to look closer into the lives that were shaped dramatically because of the excessive power that the governments held in the past. With the recent surge in government restrictions the theme becomes particularly interesting for contemporary readers.

Professor Mirkin is a scholar, whose work revolves around many subjects, well beyond the traditional realms of finance and economics.
