On October 23, CFA Association Russia launched the local stage of the 2018-2019 CFA Institute Research Challenge, a global competition in financial analysis among university students.

The official Kick-Off Event was held at the Moscow Exchange (MoEx). Around 40 students from 8 different universities attended the event. Several faculty advisers and members of the CFA Russia community were also present at MoEx. During the Kick-Off students learn about the rules and official procedures of the competition, and get an introduction to a subject company.

This year’s subject company is Norilsk Nickel, the world’s leading producer of nickel and palladium. Over the next five months, students will be learning the ins and outs of the company and write a real equity research report.

The 2018-2019 local stage of Research Challenge has 30 teams from 25 universities, including three schools from Azerbaijan and one from Belarus. Based on the rules of the competition, two best teams from the local stage will advance to the EMEA Regional Final in Switzerland held next spring.

Vladimir Tutkevich, the executive director of CFA Russia, and Dmitry Ryabykh, President of CFA Russia, opened the event with welcoming words. Vladimir briefly spoke about the rules and structure of the competition, as well as focused on important deadlines participants must keep in mind.

Dmitry emphasized the importance of adhering to CFA Institute’s code of ethics when writing a final report and avoiding plagiarism at all cost.

The highlight of the Kick-Off Event was a presentation by Sergey Zhukov, a vice-president of the Investor Relations department at Norilsk Nickel, who gave a thorough introduction to the subject company.

The evening ended with a brief Q&A session. Students had a chance to ask a few preliminary questions about the company. There will be a separate Q&A event during which the participants will have a more in-depth session with a Norilsk Nickel representative.
